What is Google Vids?

Google Vids is a new tool that is built directly into Google Drive. It allows students and staff to create videos using templates or edit videos you recorded or created with other applications. It functions very similarly to Google Slides and can be edited in a similar fashion, worked on collaboratively by students, and shared out via Google Drive as a project or video file. Google Vids has a fully functional video editor that allows students and staff to insert a variety of media including text, images, videos, sound effects, and music.

Google Vids can only be created on a MacBook or ChromeBook for now.

Why use Google Vids?

Google Vids is yet another example of video editing software. One advantage is that it uses a very familiar interface for those that are comfortable using Google Drive/Docs/Slides. It also includes the same sharing capabilities that students and staff frequently use within Google Drive. As with most video creation software, the tool allows students and staff to present information in a creative and engaging way while showcasing creativity, communication, and collaboration skills.

How do I use it?

Written Directions

Google Vids can easily be created by clicking the + New button in Google Drive.

You can select a template to use, record a video, or upload an existing video file to start your project.

If you select a template, you can choose which “scenes” you include in your project. You can also remove scenes or edit them after you insert them.

The editor interface for Google Vids looks like this. It includes many common features of Google Docs and Slides. It can be shared in the same way as well. For more detailed information on how to use the editor, watch tutorial included in the video directions below.
